Samuel L Jackson Blasts Critic

Thu, 05/10/2012 - 6:06AM by seedcornppc 0 Comments - 2 Views

New York Times film critic A.O. Scott received a nice tongue-lashing via Twitter from Samuel L. Jackson.  The iconic actor, who plays Nick Fury in most of Marvel’s comic-book films and currently in “The Avengers” tweeted the following: ”#Avengers fans,NY Times critic AO Scott needs a new job! Let’s help him find o0ne! One he can ACTUALLY do!”

Naturally, film critics are critical, hence the name.  I have never agreed with film critics that don’t speak to the general audience.  It’s evidenced by Transformers 2 overwhelming low critic rating.  Sure, the film needed some work, but it still grossed a boat-load of cash, and everyone and their mom knew it would.  I’m pretty sure Michael Bay didn’t care what the critics said when his movie grossed over $400 Million DOMESTICALLY.  Story lines and better direction was taken for the third film and as a result, a great film and better critical acclaim.

Now I’ve read Mr. Scott’s movie review, and he definitely seems jaded over comic book films.  He has a sarcastic mockery about what he’s saying, and isn’t subtle about his disdain for these types of films.   Well, what do you expect man?  At one point he said that the action is “skull-assaulting”.  Dude, seriously?  It’s a COMIC BOOK film.  People that go to see these movies understand fully what they’re going to see.  It seems as if he has a problem with the fact that people actually enjoy this style of entertainment.  I hope he understands that not ever film can be an Oscar film.  The general public know what they want to see, and that’s why the exit polls are so favorable.  He also goes on to say that this is just a giant ATM for Marvel and Disney.  Um… no shit?   Isn’t that the point of studios?  Last I checked, they were running a business and isn’t the point of business to earn a profit?

With all that said, I’ll give you a review of this film that’s easy to understand.  The film is awesome.  Chock full of action, and you get to see all your favorite characters work together, be placed in uncomfortable situations, and ultimate do what they do best, kick ass.  It’s a smart script; all the characters have their moments to shine, and the dialogue is witty and flows.  It’s a big challenge to take all those characters and have conversations that propel the story forward in a meaningful yet fun way.  Joss Whedon pulls it off.  The action is spectacular, and it’s a adrenaline-filled thrill ride.  It’s not as dark at “The Dark Knight”, it’s not as child-friendly as say, “Up”, but it’s a film that comic-book fans, children, adults, and everyone in between can enjoy.  You’re not getting raw, emotional performances.  You’re getting spectacle.  All of that worth an $18.7 Million midnight showing.  We’ll see how the weekend shapes up.  Will Harry Potter fall at the hands of a bunch of superheroes?

Blackberry 10: Get Back in the Game

Fri, 05/04/2012 - 4:49AM by seedcornppc 0 Comments - 1 Views

It’s no secret that Research In Motion, the company that makes the Blackberry smartphone has been lagging behind Apple and Google lately.  Blackberry used to be synonymous as “THE” smartphone, but with the rise of the iPhone and kick-ass Android devices, some users are defecting and that’s causing RIM to lose market share.  Hopefully that loss will come to a halt with the release of the Blackberry 10 operating system.  Announced today at the Blackberry World Conference, it looks promising.  But will it be enough, and more importantly be released soon enough to stop the bleeding?

In an article by Marguerite Reardon of CNET, she writes:

“Indeed, RIM did not show off any actual devices here at the conference, the company’s annual pow-wow where customers, partners, fanboys, and press descend to hear what’s next from the handset maker. Instead the company showed off reference devices it’s calling BlackBerry 10 Dev Alpha. It’s even been handing out these reference devices to developers to help seed the market ahead of the launch of new smartphones that actually run BlackBerry 10.

RIM’s new CEO Thorsten Heins said he understands that the market is anxious to get its hands on BlackBerry 10 devices. But he said the company is taking its time to make sure it is getting the software and the hardware just right. He didn’t give any indication when the new devices will hit the market. But some rumors peg the launch as early as August of this year, while others say it could be October.”

The market is beyond anxious Thorsten.  We’ve been waiting for a Blackberry to compete with the like of the Jesus phone and Android devices for years.  I have the new Bold, but can it “really” compete with the big boys?  And that’s exactly what critics say is holding RIM back from being one of the major players in the market right now.  Waiting too long.  As Apple and Google continue to release new updates to the iPhone and cool new features/phones, respectively, Blackberry just keeps slipping further and further down the slippery slope.

One thing is clear — the longer that RIM waits to launch its device the more it risks losing even more market share to competitors, Apple and Android. In the past year, RIM has lost nearly half of its market share, according to Gartner. In the fourth quarter of 2010, the company had about 14 percent global market share. By the end of 2011, it had about 8.8 percent market share. RBC Capital Markets analyst Mark Sue told Reuters that RIM’s market share could go down to less than 5 percent.

The problem that RIM faces as it tries to retrench and get its new software in order is that its competitors are not holding back. Google Android and Apple continue to pick up share from customers who are fleeing the tired and stale BlackBerry platform. A major worldwide outage in 2011 also didn’t help build confidence among loyal enterprise users, who are now looking to other platforms as more and more of their employees bring their own devices to work.

But Heins said that the company is on track to deliver the devices this year. And he said he doesn’t foresee any delays, something that has plagued the company in the past as it tried to launch new products.

“We are on schedule with the launch,” he said. “And we are really close.”

The article goes on to talk more in-depth about this conference and some of the positives and negatives, so take a gander.  One thing is for certain, however… the clock is ticking.  Let’s hop to it RIM.

Upgrade Time?

Fri, 04/27/2012 - 12:16AM by seedcornppc 0 Comments - 2 Views

If it’s time for you to upgrade your smartphone, by all means run, don’t walk, run to get a Lumia 900 phone from Nokia.  We’ve reviewed the phone here before, but with the new Windows interface, and now with Nokia offering a $100 bill credit for AT&T, it’s quite possibly the easiest decision you’ve ever made.  Sure, AT&T sucks and is known for being slow to send out updates for devices, but Nokia was so forward thinking they sent out an update ahead of schedule.  And of course, Nokia is known for kick-ass cell reception, something that AT&T (especially with the iPhone) isn’t known for.

Jordan Crook on Tech Crunch writes two versions of a review, a short version and a long one.  But he says it’s a no brainer.  The short version he writes is as follows:

“Guys, this one’s such a no brainer that I shouldn’t even have to lay it all out. But I will.

The Nokia Lumia 900 is an excellent handset, comes packed with a fresh new operating system in the form of Windows Phone 7.5 Mango, and thanks to a nifty AT&T bill credit from Nokia, you can essentially get this $100 LTE-equipped phone for free until the 21st. Repeat: for free.

Like I said, this one’s a no brainer.

  • 4.3-inch 480×800 AMOLED display
  • AT&T 4G LTE
  • Windows Phone 7.5 Mango
  • 1.4GHz single-core processor
  • 8MP rear camera (720p video capture)
  • 1MP front camera
  • MSRP: $100 on-contract (or free through April 21)
  • Beautiful unibody polycarbonate casing (matte)
  • Well-built and premium feeling in the hand
  • Windows Phone is a refreshing joy to use
  • Poor color reproduction on the camera
  • The display is a bit pixelated
  • If thin and light is your thing, this may feel clunky”

His long version is very in depth and really digs in to what is done well and what doesn’t quite work.  With the camera being a little shoddy and the display not being uber crisp, it keeps the phone from being an iPhone killer.  But rest assured when Nokia continues to make this phone even more bad-ass without sacrificing what makes it great, the phone will be at the top of a lot of people’s charts.  So, to echo Jordan, it doesn’t take a rocket scientist to figure this one out.  Please go upgrade to this cool phone.  Thank me later.

Sprint to the 4G LTE Finish Line

Thu, 04/19/2012 - 2:51AM by seedcornppc 0 Comments - 3 Views

Sprint knows a thing or two about playing catch up.  Since Verizon and AT&T are already in the 4gLTE mix, it’s only natural that Sprint would have to follow suit.  Looks like they’ve been doing it on the sly and now they’re ready to go big.

Dara Kerr of the CNET Blog Network writes:

“According to the technology news site TechnoBuffalo, which received the documents, it seems that Sprint’s Network Vision campaign has been in progress in Akron, Ohio; Chicago; Fort Worth, Texas; Nashville; New York; Rialto, Calif.; and Stockton, Calif., since last year. This means that these markets could possibly be next on the list to get 4G LTE activation.

In January, Sprint announced its plans to launch its 4G LTE service in 10 markets by midsummer, including major cities like Dallas, San Antonio, Houston, and Atlanta. TechnoBuffalo reports that the mobile network also recently said that it “plans to have most of its 3G markets blanketed with 4G LTE in 2014.”

Verizon Wireless and AT&T are both well under way with their own LTE deployments. Verizon announced last month that it planned to have “at least 400 markets” equipped with 4G LTE by the end of the year (it currently has about 200 sites around the U.S.) and AT&T already covers all five New York boroughs and a total of 32 markets with 4G LTE.”

This is great news for Sprint subscribers because Sprint is going to have some cool phones coming up and speed is definitely playing a factor is people’s decisions on which smartphone to get, let alone, which provider they choose.  Stefan Constantinescu of INTOMOBILE provides a great perspective in his article:

“Sprint’s going to launch a 4G LTE network this summer that’ll initially cover five to six cities. By the end of the year, Sprint expects to cover over 123 million Americans, and by the end of next year they expect that figure to climb to 250 million Americans. To put that number into some perspective, Verizon covers more than 200 million people right now, as in today, and they expect to reach 260 million people by the end this Christmas. AT&T covers less than 75 million people today with 4G LTE, but they say they’ll double that by the close of the year. So is Sprint catching up to the big boys? Hardly. According to Bob Azzi, Senior Vice President of Sprint’s Network, he says: “2014 is the big year.”

What happens in 2014? Sprint is going to turn on 4G LTE in the 800 MHz band. That spectrum is currently being used for iDEN, better known as push to talk. Less than 6 million people are currently using that network, which means that prime real estate spectrum is being underutilized. Once Sprint moves some of their 4G LTE to that band however, they’ll be much better able to compete with the likes of AT&T and Verizon, who own spectrum in the 700 MHz band. Sprint’s network will use half the amount of spectrum (5 MHz down, 5 MHz up) that AT&T and Verizon use (both do 10 MHz down, 10 MHz up), but Sprint has half the number of customers, so … less load equals more speed? We’ll find out.”

There’s been a huge debate over the spectrum and what it will mean for companies using it.  I hope Sprint does bring the heat in the speed game, because Verizon is overpriced and AT&T is over-hyped.  It’s time Sprint made a comeback.

Facebook + Instagram = X

Fri, 04/13/2012 - 11:27PM by seedcornppc 0 Comments - 3 Views

Just what that X stands for, we don’t know… yet.  That’s the biggest question on a lot of folks minds.  Why would Facebook pay $1 Billion dollars for Instagram, the photo editing app available for iOS and most recently Android devices?  Because it can.

That’s my opinion.  When Instagram CEO Kevin Systrom said that he thought Instagram could get to 100 Million users, that’s serious user base.  Now, Facebook has 850 Million users.  Sure, their goal is to get to 1 Billion.  That’s a given.  But I don’t think that’s why Facebook made this purchase.  Facebook’s ever growing user base will eventually get it to 1 Billion.  Facebook already has photos.  In fact, Facebook users upload about 100 Million photos a day!  But Instagram has something that’s pretty nifty that Facebook doesn’t have.  A simple, easy to use, FAST app that handle photos, and handles them very well.  It also is a growing “social networking” site, that has hug potential.  Molly Wood, on CNET writes, “But Facebook doesn’t need users. Facebook hasusers–some 850 million of them. And while I’ve argued that Facebook’s growth potential is slowing, the social network could scoop up another 100 million global users with its eyes closed over the next year, especially as its global expansion increases. And I’m not sure Facebook is in the market for more users so much as it’s in the business of figuring out how to make money off those users. So far, Instagram represents more users, but not any more revenue: more mouths to feed, if you will. Facebook shouldn’t be after more un-monetized users, at this point.”

Well, Instagram, as far as know, hasn’t found a way to make money off its users.  Generally speaking, you get a bunch of users and then make money off ad revenue.  That isn’t happening with Instagram, so you have to look at what the potential is.  Some circles say that Facebook bought Instagram for the mobile aspect.  Instagram does mobile very well.  Facebook has to scale down its entire PC experience for mobile, and some of it is slow (blame HTML5 some will say).  Instagram does mobile very well, and perhaps that’s worth buying.  Couple that with the fact that Facebook arguably took out a competitor, and sure you have the makings of a successful purchase.  But it’s the same story as the Microsoft purchase of Skype.  When that first went down, we didn’t know why or if it was worth the amount it paid for it.  Any sum for this purchase would have been criticized anyway.  But theories are abound, and it just makes sense that Facebook can add some additional diversity to its portfolio.

I have a sneaking suspicion that once this IPO takes place and once Facebook receives this massive influx of cash, it will be able to do what it wants.  I think then you’ll see some more acquisitions, more intuitive apps and features, and a more positive mobile experience.  In due time, as they say… In due time.

Apple: 3 Million Units Opening Weekend

Mon, 04/09/2012 - 10:27PM by seedcornppc 0 Comments - 2 Views

Apple CEO Tim Cook announced a “record weekend” for Apple, but didn’t go into specifics.  Companies will do this sometimes to boost confidence in investors and keep critics from putting too much emphasis on specific numbers.  But of course, Apple simply didn’t wanna ruin the surprise.  It turns out, Apple’s “record weekend” was just that, and then some, as it sold three million of it’s “new iPads” in the first weekend of release.

According a press release from Apple:

“The new iPad is a blockbuster with three million sold―the strongest iPad launch yet,” said Philip Schiller, Apple’s senior vice president of Worldwide Marketing. “Customers are loving the incredible new features of iPad, including the stunning Retina display, and we can’t wait to get it into the hands of even more customers around the world this Friday.”

By comparison, Apple sold about 4 million iPhone 4s’s during its first weekend, but we’re talking about the iPad, which cost about twice as much.  That’s not too shabby, and I’m still trying to figure out why.  During the iPad 2 launch, numbers weren’t released, but some analysts feel the numbers were between 500K and 1Million.  During the original iPad’s launch, Apple moved about 300, 000 units opening weekend.  So why are the numbers growing with each iteration?  I know the Retina display is nice, and with 4G LTE speed, it surely is an attractive option.   But 3 Million units?  In three days?

Surely, it’s got to be the word of mouth and the array of features that have so many people saying they’ve “gotta have it.”  Despite the 4G LTE only working on Verizon and AT&T, Apple does boost an impressive “improvement” of features.  From Apple’s press release, “The new iPad features a stunning new Retina™ display, Apple’s new A5X chip with quad-core graphics, a 5 megapixel iSight® camera with advanced optics for capturing amazing photos and 1080p HD video, and still delivers the same all-day 10 hour battery life* while remaining amazingly thin and light. iPad Wi-Fi + 4G supports ultrafast 4G LTE networks in the US and Canada, and fast networks around the world including those based on HSPA+ and DC-HSDPA.”  Perhaps folks just wanted a tablet that could record and capture photos in 1080P, and had a display that would make everything as crisp as humanly possible.  The Retina display is a nice game-changer and is exactly the kind of innovation that keeps Apple ahead of the curve.

When reading reviews on the new iPad, they are all nothing short of praise-worthy.  The Retina display is so awesome that one writer suggested not even looking at the new iPad if considering buying an iPad 2.  That’s crazy.  And reviews of the 4G LTE said that the speeds were faster than home ethernet.  The actual device itself is fast, but so is the iPad 2, so not much difference between the core chip in the iPad 2 vs. the new iPad.  My best guess is the new chip is designed be multi-cored in order to handle the graphics of the Retina display.  What’s interesting is that the Retina display came out on the iPhone a while back, and critics said that it may not be able to be scaled up to an iPad.  Apple has clearly been in the lab and with just three immediately obvious improvements has ensured that it stays on top of the tablet world for the time being.  Check out Tech Crunch’s full review of the new iPad here, and you’ll see just how cool the display is vs. the older version.

What’s even more impressive?  The new iPad will launch in even more countries this Friday.  Boom.

Smartphones Stick it to Digital Cameras

Sun, 04/01/2012 - 11:24PM by seedcornppc 0 Comments - 1 Views

When you’re out and about using your smartphone and you see something interesting, do you put your phone away, reach into your pocket and grab your digital camera?  Of course not, because then you not only have to go home, plug in the device or remove the memory card and use a card reader to access your files via computer, but then you’d have to transfer the images to your hard drive (if you wanna backup of your files and to make room on your card), and then upload them manually to whatever social networking sites you wish to share them on.  Whew.  Sounds like a lot.  But that’s how we used to do things.  Not anymore.  According to a new report from Bloomberg today, smartphones are kicking digital cameras in the teeth and it doesn’t look like that’s gonna stop.

In the above mentioned example, you simply go to the camera on your smartphone, take a picture, open the options for that image (alter it if you want using photo editing software or instagr.am for you iPhone users), and then upload it to Facebook right there with a caption.  It’s simple.  Here’s the funny part… the image is fine.  It’s not just a convenience factor anymore.  Smartphone cameras are rocking incredible resolutions and simple functions that used to be solely the territory of digital cameras.  For example, I was working an event the other evening and a couple of the girls were having a hard time getting the digital camera flash to get the right lighting.  I suggested using my Blackberry, and the pictures came out amazing.  I take loads of photos with my blackberry, and it actually has a plethora of settings for shooting different objects wether it be auto, landscape, or text, etc.  Flash, no flash, auto-flash, and 4X zoom are all standard, and the camera is 5 megapixels.  That aint half bad.  Unless I’m a professional looking for the max resolution possible and editing photos using Photoshop, the smartphone provides more than enough to get by… and is super convenient.

“The cell-phone camera is becoming more accepted as the primary camera,” said Pamela Tufegdzic, an analyst at research firm IHS Inc. “Smartphones are cannibalizing the point-and- shoot, digital-still camera market.”  In this very same article, it is said that digital camera shipments are expected to fall by 4.3% again this year to 115.2M units.  Bloomberg’s report goes on to say, “The iPhone 4S, Apple’s latest smartphone, takes photos with 60 percent higher resolution than the company’s previous model. HTC, which makes smartphones based on Google Inc.’s Android operating system, said its new One handsets capture images in poor-lighting conditions. And Nokia Oyj (NOK1V), the world’s biggest mobile-phone maker by volume, last month introduced a handset with a camera sensor that the company says delivers photos with five times the resolution of the iPhone 4S.”

I don’t know that this is the death of the digital camera, but it does seem to be wounded, badly.  The high-end will always be the high end, but for the average consumer, the appeal of a separate device to handle photo responsibilities when a smartphone is just as efficient and more convenient could spell doom.  Remember the mobile gaming arena?  Remember how folks are now just playing tiny, addicting games on their mobile devices without the need for an additional form factor?  Same story here.  Sure, digital cameras, like handheld gaming platforms, are going to be better and higher quality than a smartphone.  But is that difference enough to justify running around with two devices?  If the report is any indication… No.

Apple Will Open Early on Friday

Mon, 03/19/2012 - 5:02AM by seedcornppc 0 Comments - 2 Views

If you’re an Apple fantastic, you probably already know this, but Apple will open it’s stores one to two hours early on Friday to accommodate the throngs of people vying for the new iPad.  Featuring a new retina display, the 5MP iSight camera, and 4G LTE, it’s an improvement, but does it wow?

Interesting, Apple is calling the new iPad… wait for it… “The New iPad.”  You can read Computer World’s FAQ article here.  If you’re not an Apple fanatic, or if you’re already an iPad owner, then perhaps you’re wondering what all the hoopla is about?  Well, you have arguably some of the greatest minds in the tech world working at Apple.  So each new product is going to feature something cool and/or better than the previous iteration.  That’s almost a given.  The new iPad has a retina display which has 4 times the pixels than the iPad 2.  That’s incredible.  According to Apple, “The Retina display on the new, third-generation iPad makes everything look crisper and more lifelike.  Text is razor sharp. Colors are more vibrant. Photos and videos are rich with detail. All thanks to the 3.1 million pixels powered by the new A5X chip. It’s the best mobile display ever.”  The retina display is cool, no doubt about that, but the best part of the new iPad is the new 4G LTE.  Previously, the iPad was hampered by slow connectivity, but now that all should change, and it’s a welcome change.  With the tablet game heating up and Microsoft about drop the hammer with Windows 8, Apple needs to stay as far ahead of the pack as possible.

According to Computer World,

“Although Apple has exhausted its online supply available for delivery this week — the current wait time before shipping is two to three weeks in all markets — iPad orders can be placed for at-home or at-work delivery, or set for pick-up at a nearby Apple store.

The company has not yet created a reservation system for iPad purchases similar to what it created last October during the iPhone 4S launch, but if supplies remain tight, it may turn to that process for in-store purchases of the new tablet.”

I’ve actually seen a couple surveys regarding how significant this newest generation of iPad is and most people think the retina display will be the difference maker.  I’m not sure.  It’s like the difference between 720p and 1080p.  Some people just don’t notice or care enough to pay more for a True HD television.  I think that the new 4G LTE will make it a player for sure, and with the iBooks 2 really taking charge with the textbooks initiative, it’s definitely going to be a game-changer in the education sector.  I’m not sure where Apple goes from here.  I’m surprised to not see Siri integration.  Of course the insides are going to be upgraded each year, that’s a given.  The camera being upgraded, that’s expected too.  The display is nice, but were can they go from here?  One thing is for sure.  At 8am, millions across the world (U.S., Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Hong Kong, Japan, Singapore, Switzerland, the United Kingdon, Puerto Rico and the US Virgin Islands) will be in line to tell you how far the iPad has come in one year.

Don’t Worry, Pinterest’ll Refer Ya

Sat, 03/17/2012 - 12:03AM by seedcornppc 0 Comments - 1 Views

In an article from Online Media Daily, Laurie Sullivan writes, “Marketers could find a gold mine in Pinterest, but could have challenges with copyright laws. Last month the site sent more referral traffic to publishers than Google and Twitter, according to a traffic report released this week.”  We all know that Pinterest is the next big thing since Beats by Dre headphones, but what’s more intriguing is how users are actually using the site.

Marketing and Advertising are tricky arenas of business, because of all the mediums.  We recently discussed the various social networking sites here, and how marketers and advertisers should cater to each social network’s niche.  In the old days, you’d put up a poster in the busiest part of town and that was all the advertising you’d need.  Then things advanced and you had to start shooting commercials, putting up billboards and running ads in newspapers and magazines.  With the internet, there are so many ways to go about reaching your audience that we now have to be more savvy than ever in order to maximize our reach.  Pinterest is such a case study.  In the above referenced article, Sullivan writes that “An eMarketer report reveals that Pinterest users in the U.S. spent on average 88.3 minutes on the site in November 2011. Compare that with Facebook at 394 minutes, Tumblr at 141.7, and Twitter at 24.4.”  That’s important to note, because with Pinterest outpacing Twitter for referral traffic, you’d like to know why.

In my opinion, Twitter is quick, to-the-point, and best suited for quick info.  Pinterest, naturally is going to engage users more because it’s visual first and foremost, and pin boards are made of a whole range of items, which keep you looking and finding your own things you want to re-pin.  Pinterest is, to say the least, engaging.  What’s even more critical is that users will see something they like and want to know more about it.  With Facebook and Tweetsville, you have to like, or share items and it’s a more involved process.  With Pinterest, its a little easier to get from site to site.

Sullivan also points out that copyrights are an issue with Pinterest.  With Facebook, you post your own photos.  With Pinterest, you’re re-pinning other people’s photos that may be theirs or they may have just found it on the net.  If there was a simple solution to have every photo on the site available only after it had been labeled as to who the author was, you could solve that issue pretty quickly.

For now, Pinterest is doing a very good job with the referral traffic and that should help alleviate some of the questions from critics that ask how Pinterest is going to make money.  As the site gets more and more engaging, they will start to see more and more user involvement and the numbers can only hope to continue their climb.  Hey, they’ve piqued my pinterest.

Windows 8 is Finer Than Frog Hair

Wed, 03/07/2012 - 12:03AM by seedcornppc 0 Comments - 1 Views

So the Windows 8 Beta has been out, but they definitely revealed more than a beta today.  Windows 8 Consumer Preview is here.  And boy am I excited.  Windows 8 will do for PC’s and Tablets what email did for smartphones.  It’s that damn good.

I’ve had a chance to play with it a bit, although not nearly as much as I’d like to, and I was amazed.  Looking back, Windows 7 was smooth, familiar, and a much, much, much needed upgrade to Vista.  Along with Windows ME, Vista was probably a product that shouldn’t have been.  (However, it did have some cool features, like Aero.)  Then we moved to Windows 7, which was really secure.  Now, we’re getting into Windows 8 and it is cutting-edge, secure, fun to play with, moves seamlessly from touchscreen to mouse/keyboard, and is a social media sync’ing genius.

Windows 8 is a breeze to operate, once you get the hang of it.  I hope, like some previous versions of Windows, that when you first get the computer or tablet, or install Windows 8, it takes you through a quick tutorial, much in the same way video games do.  In the gaming world, you have to follow the on screen tutorials until you’ve proven that you understand and can execute the controls (in some games), or else, you can’t move forward in the game.  This is perfect because once you’ve gotten the hang of it, you can move on.  Without this, you’d be stuck trying to “figure out” what does what, and may be able to finish the game without ever knowing how to perform a certain task that would have made things so much more fun or easy.  If Windows 8 ships with something along those lines, the learning curve is toast, and folks will understand why this OS is the best thing since fried onions on a ranch burger.

Touchscreen integration is where this OS lives and thrives.  Windows 8 loves the edges and swiping from right to left will take you the Windows essentials.  Swiping from Left to Right will take you to the Apps.  It gets more involved than that, but it’s pretty basic and works fine.  The split keyboard option is designed for thumb use.  Like the Guinness guys say, “Brilliant!”  Another aspect that is noticeable on both the PC and touchscreen versions is the speed at which this OS flies.  Zippy.  Which simply put, “feels” responsive.  It’s undeniably satisfying to be able to whip through apps and pages at a quick speed and with great efficiency.

Sync is huge in Windows 8, as with the Metro design, we’re looking through “windows” at our news feed, social media updates, photo syncs, and our upcoming events in calendar.  That’s going to be key moving forward, as Windows 8, especially from what I’ve read around the web, is arguably the best OS out there for this kind of thing.

Security is tighter than a snare drum, and we wouldn’t expect anything less.  With early adopters and just the possibilities for businesses to really use this OS on touch screen PC’s, security must be robust.  With IE 10, malware and phishing are facing the most formidable hurdle since Houdini had to climb out of chains while submerged.

There’s countless more aspects about this awesome OS that I’d love to chat about, but I don’t wanna ruin the surprise.  When this OS is released, and folks start realizing that it’s the best thing since sliced bread, Apple is going to have it’s hands full.  I fully believe that Microsoft can really gain some serious ground in the tablet market and I’m looking forward to seeing that happen.  I’ve always been a PC fanboy, and seeing this OS just got me excited.  Like getting picked to be the oil man on the Hawaiian Tropics tour bus, I’m stoked!
